An update after five years of enjoying Sushi Kuni! The update you ask? Still without question the best sushi option in our neck of the woods. Super fresh maki rolls, friendly staff, and an ambient setting behind the very suburban facade. The "Farmer" roll is off the chaaaain. Seriously. Vegetarians, take note- it's deliciously satisfying.

Great decor. Was greeted in a friendly manner and sat/served immediately. The food was fresh and the ginger dressing was delicious on the salad. They had a full sushi menu along with some korean noodle & soup dishes.

Really enjoyed the food here. Fresh and tasty rolls, Mr W enjoyed his sashimi, Baby W enjoyed the shrimp and scallops and even ate edamame with CHOP STICKS. Why 4 and not 5....The service was not good. The staff had empty tables and then told us we would still have a 40 minute wait. They seemed overwhelmed that they were busy.

Amazing meal, sushi rolls were phenomenal, love the shrimp shumai. Best part of my meal was having MY as our server. She was very helpful, I asked about her favorites and recommendations, my date had never had sushi before. She was extremely forth coming with her thoughts, which I greatly appreciated. He will definitely be eating sushi again. I got the great pleasure of getting to hear MY with her other guest. Was very impressed on how she interacted with a family of 4, with 2 young kids and the dad who asked for silverware because they didn't know how to use chopsticks. She brought kids chopsticks to them, very thoughtful. It was lovely to hear someone else enjoying there evening! I fell in love with her when she asked for my ID, and not the ID of my date. From then on she was on point. MY, I thank you and please thank the chefs that made my dinner exceptional!!!!!

Oh, Sushi Kuni, how you continue to be my favorite "Should I spend the extra money on food? Yes, I should," restaurant. This place can pack a rather hefty pricetag, but it's completely worth it. The service has always been wonderful - a few weeks ago, our rolls were taking a while (though no longer than you would wait at any other restaurant waiting for hot food) and our waitress felt so bad that she put in an order for a set of beef dumplings for us, on the house, and the dumplings were extra fantastic too. They have a good selection of "classic rolls," cheaper and a bit smaller, that still taste like a million bucks, like the kamiaze roll! Their signature rolls are also great, and you absolutely have to try the house special roll too. Before you head to Sushi Kuni, check out Groupon. They've lately been offtering a deal for a $25 Sushi Kuni voucher for $15, which is a great deal.

This was really disappointing after I saw the crazy Yelp reviews about this place. I had just tried the best sushi I've ever had in Midland, MI, so maybe I was setting myself up for the disappointment, but I was in the mood for sushi again so we tried Sushi Kuni for dinner. It wasn't terribly busy on a weeknight, so we were immediately seated. The very enthusiastic waitress was great throughout the dinner service--lots of energy and really friendly. I got a side salad and we split dumplings and two rolls, one being the barbecue roll they light on fire. The dumplings were pretty good, good taste but needed a little bit more crunch on the outside. The big disappointment was the sushi, though. The barbecue roll which everyone raves about was merely okay. It was lukewarm since it had been set on fire which was just weird for sushi. I wouldn't get it again. The fire was very cool, though. The other roll we got (forgot the name) was nothing to write home about. The place itself was nice on the inside--don't let the strip mall exterior fool you. I wouldn't be running back here next time I'm in GR, but it's not a bad option for dinner, either.

We came here for a late lunch and were certainly happy with the choice! I started off with a ginger salad and the dressing was really good. I'm glad I tried it. My husband tried the miso soup and it was flavored really well. For lunch, I had the Philadelphia rolls and the Spicy Tuna rolls. I was very excited that the Philadephia roll had avocado in it, as that is rare in the Grand Rapids area from the sushi that I have tried. The Spicy Tuna rolls were really good and had a nice spicy to it. My husband had the pork tempura with this really yummy sauce. The vegetables were good; however, there were a lot of onions in comparison to the peppers and brocolli. Overall, it was really good. The service was good and we were in and out in about 35 minutes. We will be back.

Kudos to your taste in Hayao Miyazaki music! Nothing like eating a good meal with good music that takes you back to childhood movies like Spirited Away! :) I don't think I've ever complimented a restaurant for their music, so you guys get a gold star. Sushi Kuni's food is fresh, the prices are average and the sushi selection is off the charts. It takes me a while (forever) to decide what to order. My husband loves their tempura shrimp udon soup and spicy tuna rolls. Favorite: One thing that really stood out to me was their Takoyaki which are Japanese octopus dumplings. I was hesitant to try them because they sound so... different and kind of... gross but..... they were delicious and exploded with flavor. I would order them again indefinitely. This is my #2 Sushi favorite in West Michigan. It offers a typical date ambiance, good music, and a very large variety of sushi, soups, bentos... etc. I miss this restaurant. Eat well for me yelpers. Eat away.

Food is very good. They have a nice assortment of Japanese and Korean dishes and sushi. They also have a small kids menu with reasonably priced and healthy options. I've been to sushi kuni 4 times and have always sat at the sushi bar. I have been to many sushi bars and restaurants around the country. The one thing sushi kuni needs to take their restaurant to the next level is to get sushi chefs that are friendly, high energy, and exciting to be around. These guys are boring. They don't even put your sushi in front of you at the bar when it is ready. Instead they put it on the waitstaff counter for the waiter or waitress to deliver it. They need to get some personality. They don't even talk or smile at all. I think it's because the grumpy owner ruins it for everyone. If they can bring some fun to the bar I have no doubt they would do much better.

In my opinion, the best sushi in GR (and I know a few Japanese people who agree). The fish tastes fresh, the specialty roll selection is large, and the Korean food is great too. As with most sushi places, you'll get miso soup and a house salad with ginger sauce along with most of the meals. They changed the ginger sauce recipe a few years back, and it's not as awesome as it used to be. I usually like starting with gyoza or seaweed salad and then ordering an assortment of rolls to share. If you're with a group, this is the way to go - you'll get to try a bit of everything. Don't feel obliged to only order special rolls. I usually like to get a salmon hand roll for myself too. The spicy seafood bibimbop is great, and chicken katsu is a classic Japanese entree. Order the chirashi if you're into sashimi and have never tried this dish before. It's a bit expensive, but an experience you don't want to miss out on. If you're feeling some dessert, there are many ice cream options: green tea, red bean, mochi, tempura. I've never had tempura ice cream, though. Protip: it's fun to get seated in a private tatami room, in which you sit on a cushion on wooden seats.

The sushi and restaurant is mediocre at best. We ordered 3 rolls and it took close to 25 minutes to complete with about 5 other customers in the restaurant. The sushi has no flavor. Everyone says its the freshest around and that's probably because they put fresh produce in the majority of their rolls. Everything was over powered either by Avocado or cucumber. Their sauces were good, but I dont want sauce and sushi. I want the fish to be the star. This place isn't the worst I've been to in GR, but I can think of a lot better options. Also, this place is one of the higher priced places in the area. Terrible value for the money. Go to Haru, or Osaka.

  • Andrew W.

Food was UNREAL delicious. However they were so overwhelmed having 6 tables at once we had to wait for 20 minutes to be seated even though half the place was empty. We counted at least 3 or 4 waitresses so unsure why they couldn't handle that much (little) traffic. Weird.

  • Lily P.

Tempura udon is really good here. The sushi prices are high but probably are the best in the area by far.

  • Sara D.

Service was lacking slightly only reason why this place doesn't have a 5 star rating with that being said, the food was phenomenal ! Reasonably priced. I can't wait to visit again on my next trip to Michigan.

I gave this place another try after a long hiatus. I was very satisfied with my dinner! I ran in for a quick meal before going grocery shopping. The house salad and ginger dressing is wonderful as always. I liked the flavor of the miso soup, my only comment is that it could've been hotter, but it was still tasty. I ordered the Farmers Roll, my personal fave. I used to special order this before it became a menu item and I'm so glad it has. Contrary to my previous review, I thought the prices were appropriate. My waitress was sweet as can be. I will be back soon! :)

My husband and I have eaten here several times. This place is my favorite sushi place in Grand Rapids. It's especially nice since they remodeled the interior. The only draw back is you have to wait a long time for your food. A lot of times we had to wait for drink refills. I especially like the BBQ roll, Alaskan, and volcano rolls.

  • Marianne G.

Average.... Nothing great, sushi tasted like average sushi. Didn't get sick - that's a plus. Edamame was pretty good. Atmosphere was lacking... Fruit flies in our face the entire time. :-(

Excellent Sushi Restaurant! I'm so embarrassed that it took me so long to eat here, but I'm never going anywhere else now! Came in on valentine's day night for dinner. We arrived early to beat the rush and didn't have an issue getting a booth. Our server quickly welcomed us and gave us the menus. Being Valentines, they offered a special on a bottle of wine, which we ordered. The menu is extensive with allot of great options for the sushi novice or the sushi junkie. My husband and I settled on different Sushi and Sashimi combo plates to try a little of everything. I also ordered a seaweed salad and my husband got the Miso soup. I typically don't like Miso soup but in trying a taste of his, I had a change of heart. Apparently, every other place has been doing it wrong because this Meso was super tasty! Although my seaweed salad was good, I wish I would've gotten the soup instead. Our main plates came out quickly and my one and only complaint about my visit was that our server didn't explain what each item was. We guessed at what we were eating but found everything superbly crafted. I ordered tempura ice-cream to finish the meal off. It first time having it and I was in love at first bite! Price was very reasonable for sushi, wine, and desert dinner and we left full but not stuffed. Can't wait to come back!

Best sushi in GR, hands down. I'm also a big fan on their katsu and bibimbap. The teriyaki is only so-so though (too much cabbage?). Haven't had bad service here and I'm there pretty regularly.

4.5 out of 5. Nice clean restaurant. Very warm service. Excellent sushi. We had the "barbecue" which is better than it sounds. It comes "on fire" wrapped in foil. It has a smokey complex flavor. It was soooo good. Will definitely go back and try more.

I loved the sashimi, fresh and the ginger was lovely the miso soup was delicate in taste and the appearance of the restaurant is beautiful, pleasant, no wait time and reasonable price.

Good but expensive. The service was on point, the ambience much nicer than the strip mall first impression. We had yaki noodles, spider roll and Kanpyo roll. The noodles were mild but flavorful. My spider roll was ok but low on both crab and masago. The Kanpyo was much more generous.

Quaint little gem in Grand Rapids. Very attentive service. Highly recommend the Kuni Special for a little taste of everything. Includes, miso soup, ginger salad, Albap, chawanmushi, sashimi and nigiri. Amazing cuts of very fresh sashimi. Pricey but you're paying for quality. And yes, they do serve alcohol.

i'm always nervous when I go out for sushi when I'm out of town. however this place had great sushi and the staff were very friendly the fish was very fresh and the prices were very reasonable as someone who's very picky with is sushi I thought this place was a great place to eat

Flew from Tokyo to GR and went straight to Kuni. Only joint in GR that lives up to the highest standards of traditional sushi.

  • Mui K.

I don't understand the high ratings for this place, maybe it's the sushi rolls they have here? I came and tried their sashi combo and seaweed salad. -Sashimi combo: fish was slightly fishy, did not taste extremely fresh like it should. It was also not cut correctly and effected the texture -Seaweed salad: seemed extra slimey to me

We arrived at 7:15 PM and the place was practically empty. But we were still told we had to wait 20 minutes to get seated. Not acceptable.

The only place I go for sushi! My sister and I go almost every time she visits GR. The 2 of us can share 2 - 3 rolls and be pretty content when we walk out. I'm not a sushi expert, but I've never been disappointed with the foodor the atmosphere. The staff is friendly and always willing to answer questions. My top choices are the Harry Potter and the Vegas Roll.

  • Nicholas L.

This is a great little place tucked away off 28th street. Great service, very friendly and fast. The Michigan roll was out of this world and kamikaze roll was outstanding. Also had some classics like a spicy tuna roll and tried their chicken teriyaki roll. Both were great. This will be our new Grand Rapids sushi go to.

  • Adaija P.

The atmosphere is absolutely gorgeous in here along with a pretty friendly wait staff, but the food is another story. I would recommend coming here just for sushi, maybe it's just the way they cook in this restaurant but the people here have managed to burn rice not only once but twice!!! It was rather irritating, but other than the rice fiasco it was a rather pleasant experience.

Being the conquerer of the sushi kingdom that I am, I heard that one establishment existed in the Greater Grand Rapids area, yet to be vanquished. Insulted by the fact that there was uncooked, uneaten, rogue sushi fish roaming freely; I sheathed my chopsticks, and mentally prepared for the looming battle ahead. When the moment was right, I stroke! I entered the establishment, was seated, and was left to peruse the menu. Choosing not to be distracted by the beautiful decor, and the friendly smiles exchanged with the "Kuni's", I focused; knowing that behind the scenes, a sushi army was forming. Then, out of nowhere, waves and waves of the fish army came, escorted by a beautiful Kuni woman. Chopsticks in hand, the battle ensued. Ripping and tearing, chomping and chewing, soy sauce flying through the air; numbers were falling to my two wooden blades. I was making progress! The waves come slower and slower, and eventually there were no more. Kuni had been vanquished. Another kingdom claimed! Bottom line: great staff, tasty sushi, nice decor. I like this place :)

We came here on a day trip to GR craving good sushi and we were not disappointed! The quality of this sushi as well as the presentation and atmosphere were all fantastic. We were also impressed with their service and how friendly all the staff and owners were. We did go early enough on a Saturday to not be too crowded, but regardless I'm sure their service would be as attentive and kind anytime. We will definitely come back whenever we drive up to GR!

This place is literally around the corner and I overlook it all the time but it definitely is a great dining experience. The food was fresh, which of course made it delicious. The sushi is beyond good at this place, a bit pricey, but for sushi you pay for quality. They have food for everyone here. The sake was welcoming with our dinner. The chef (sorry I didn't really catch his name) was fantastic, I'm not sure where they got this guy from but he is amazing at his craft. The rolls are tasty and have a bit of guac in between them that made them that much better. My friend had a philly roll which was phenomenal as well (I tried some). The place is quiet while playing some flute jamzzz in the background. Nice and spacious inside for being hidden so well in plain sight. Overall an enjoyable dining experience.

Got a deal from Groupon and came here for quick lunch. We shared dragon roll, sushi combo and tempura. All really good and fresh. Prices could be better.

Though Sushi Kuni has good food (especially for the area), we have noticed that over our past few visits the service level has dwindled down to a very low, unacceptable point. They used to have a couple of bubbly, sweet waitresses that were awesome. Lately all we have seen is a few guys whom are un-attentive and consistently slow. I can deal with slow, and I can deal with waiting on my water to finally be filled around the time I take my last bite. What I cannot deal with is snootiness, and aggressiveness. My husband ordered a fried rice last time we visited (his staple), in which the vegetables were very obviously frozen veggies due to the fact that they tasted like freezer burn. You know the flavor. It's gross. It changed the whole dish and made it quite honestly inedible. When we brought this to the attention of our lovely waiter, he decided to take the aggressive route and proclaimed how there was nothing wrong with it, in fact; it is actually really good. My husband was told to order something else off the menu if he wanted to (with a high level of attitude and sighs), and was informed that 'even though you are ordering something else, I'm going to charge you for the rice as there is nothing wrong with it'. Sad.

Stopped in while in town for work and I'm definitely glad I did!! Hands down the best/freshest seafood I've had in a long time. I wish I had a sushi place this good back home. Highly recommended!

Taylor (my 21 year old daughter) and I enjoyed great sushi lunch today. We are making a goal to try every sushi place in town. The 4 sushi rolls we ordered were incredible (spicy California, calamari tempura, Dix shrimp roll, and big mouth roll). Sushi Kuni was just about empty at 2pm and it was a great environment. The Kuni Sangria was great. The service was a little strange. I felt a little animosity because we used a Groupon. We made reservations and indicated it was groupon special. Why sell them if you don't want the business? Server indicated "we have just had so much busineSs because of it". I would think that would be a good thing. Today's server seemed to not really want to work. She told a walkin (non groupon) group of 9 ladies they couldn't be accommodated. Huh? The place was fairly empty. It was strange to see a 9 top walk out the door. Anyway, great food and drink. Ok service. Can't wait to go back for the Korean dishes they offer.

I was pretty excited to try Sushi Kuni after all of the great reviews I read. But, after waiting for over an hour for our food when there was only 3 other tables being served, it was hard to enjoy my meal. Our waiter was high and rude. He didn't seem to care that our food was sitting at the sushi bar for at least `15 minutes before be brought it to us. The food was not bad, but not great, I will not be going back to Sushi Kuni. There are better sushi restaurants in Grand Rapids for sure.

A great sushi selection. Tons of different kinds of rolls to choose from. It was hard to pick! We ended up ordering the Alaska, kamikaze, volcano and two spicy crunchy tuna rolls. They were all delicious. The spicy tuna was a little spicier than I'm used to, but was still good. The volcano was prepared in a way I have never seen. It was topped with a heaping pile of a noodly/crab topping. It was very tasty and a unique twist on the usual volcano roll I'm accustomed to seeing. The roll sizes were generous, the prices were reasonable, and the wait staff was super attentive. We went at around 6 pm and it was dead. Not sure why! It was a great sushi place! But it was nice to be seated right away so I'm not complaining.

This is our favorite sushi place. Very relaxed and absolutely delicious. Big rolls and reasonable prices. They always have the staples (California, Philadelphia, cucumber, etc), but also have their own creations and specialty rolls. Not into sushi? They also have Korean food. We eat here about once a month because yes, it is that good!

Awesome place. Came here for my last meal before my parents left me at college for good. Sad that I couldn't one of my mom's home cooked meals, but this wasn't a bad alternative. The place is rather small and dimly, and we went around lunchtime so there was no one there, but that did not mean the food was bad. They did have a salad + rolls lunch special for $6.99, but we didn't take advantage of that and just ate some classic rolls, tempura udon (which I highly recommend,) and some special rolls. They have a tv playing sports at a low volume or on mute and the waitress was very sweet. Overall, the rolls were very tasty and I was very satisfied with this being my meal parents before college. I personally ordered the Vegas roll and I think a Calamari roll (shown in pictures) and shared a tempura udon with my dad. Very good combination! Loved it! :) All in all, an awesome place. And if you're looking for Korean food, they have a bunch of specials on the menu for that as well.

Aaaack! No thanks! OK, before I write my review, it is only fair that I inform you my husband really loved this place. He ordered the spider roll sushi platter, which he enjoyed immensely. As for me, no way! Different reaction! I ordered the five-course combo meal ($18), and was disappointed with every item except the broth. Just as you see in the pictures, many of the dishes are raw fish. They did not explain this is the descriptions for the menu items. Sure, maybe the names might have implied it, but for someone completely uneducated with what each name means, a description would have been helpful. If it's raw, please say somewhere in that description that it's raw! I completely wasted my food, and ordered the sushi rolls. But I even found the sushi rolls to be so-so. They left the shells on the shrimp in the spider rolls. Why would they leave the shells on? It was so gross! Remove the shells. Nobody eats those!

After three visits, this has hands down become one of my favorite sushi restaurants...ever. It is most definitely my favorite in Grand Rapids! The sushi is always fresh and fantastic. I love every roll that I have tried from their simple spicy tuna, to the more elaborate lobster roll or the flame kissed BBQ roll, which is served on fire. I always start with the house salad. It is served with their homemade ginger dressing that is TO DIE FOR! I am always tempted to order a second one...! I have only tried a few dishes outside of sushi. The fried rice was very good!! The staff is super friendly, only adding to the overall great dining experience that is to be found at Sushi Kuni. The restaurant usually has a relatively quiet atmosphere. So it is easy to converse with the people you come with.. unlike some other sushi restaurants in the area. The decor is simple but nice. Very clean. I really do not have a bad thing to say about this place... oh, and their green tea ice cream is super yummy :), great end to the meal!

I love this place.. A very sublime experience. Delicate, complex flavors. I love most Sushi, so I guess I can mostly review it for service and decor. It has nice lighting, a traditional feel to it.

It's one of my top Sushi places in GR. Great roll selection, not expensive. If you are a non-sushi fan there are lots of options on the menu for you. My husband says they have the best chicken fried rice. Enjoy. You won't be disappointed.

My family loves this place and have been coming here for great Sushi and Bibimbop for several years. They've recently added a new Hot Stone Bibimbop which is absolutely fabulous, easily the best in GR. If you've never had this Korean staple, I strongly encourage you to try this special version. The prices have crept up a big over the years, but the updated decor and ambience are great, nice selection of sake, and the food never disappoints.

Super sushi! Newly remodeled and newer menu. We typically only order sushi and rolls here and all are great. We never have a problem getting a table and the staff are friendly and helpful. Try the 007 roll off the specialty roll menu.

Great sushi. Great prices, around $6 to $9 gets you two sushi rolls. Great atmosphere. Don't let the location fool you. We tried a variety, but my favorite was the Philadelphia roll with salmon, avocado, and cream cheese.

I am madly, deeply in love with this place. I LOVE SUSHI, and this is the most delicious sushi I have ever had. We were regulars for both dine in and take-out while living near, and now I crave it daily being so far away! The service is impeccable and we never have short of a perfect experience.

This is the goto place for Sushi in GR for me. Hands down the most fresh sashimi and sushi rolls. They have great Korean food as well. The Bulgogi is incredible. I've never had a bad meal here in the 4 years they have been open. If your a sushi lover you have to try them out. If your looking for an adventure in Asian food, they have it, Japanese, Korean, Thai & Chinese. Enjoy!

Good sushi, my wife loves crab rangoons and they don't have them, so she got the moonlight roll which is like crab rangoons and she loved it! Very satisfying would definitely come back!

The sushi here is very good, as are the spring rolls. Service was good, price was typical for sushi, and we left as happy customers!

I have only had the nigiri sushi here but of all the types I've had and tried, I was very happy with the quality and cut of the fish. I love nigiri sushi and that's what I usually order when I go to eat sushi. The rolls and other things I can't comment on too much but nigiri gets a thumbs up.

The sushi was fresh! Prices were reasonable, but not the cheapest I've seen, which explains the high quality. The staff is very professional and courteous. Would I return? Absolutely! I definitely recommend this establishment.

  • Orson B.

Tried this place today based on the solid reviews and wasn't disappointed. Both the miso and mushroom soup were excellent as was the sushi and tempura ice cream. Also liked the atmosphere and service. Sushi is expensive, but when steak, pizza, pasta and burgers aren't appealing, the sometimes the subtle flavor of sushi is the only thing that fits the bill. I'll be back next time I need a sushi fix.

  • Steve H.

Great rolls.. Very fresh seafood, the sushi chef knew his stuff. I think he may have been rushed. The cucumber in our rolls was chopped a little to thick for my taste. Felt like u was biting into more cucumber than sushi at times. Overall very fresh fish. Will be back.

Everything is so good. Everytime a server comes out of the kitchen I turn around and gets curious what the other table is having. Excellent service! Greatly priced. Cocktails are also well made...

Sushi Kuni is amazing. It is a somewhat small restaurant, but it has never been very busy when I have been there. This makes for a great quiet meal for a date or catching up with friends. I would recommend one of their signature rolls which are around $11 to $15 depending on which one you get. All the ones I've tried have been delicious. Also a non-sushi-lover person I know ordered their fried rice which was very good as well. Lastly, customer service is very good. Never had any issues with drink refills and the staff all seem pretty friendly.

  • Jane L.

I can safely say since my initial post I have been here every 1-2 weeks. Love!! Recently they've been going more into cocktails. I tried the Kuni Sangria, and it was great! It's a bit different than the sangria I have had like at Sanchez because they actually add sake to it! It gives it a little different bite. I still eat my regular fix here, I think I recommended the spicy conch last time, and I still do but just to let you know they run out and can't make anymore some nights. I've delved into their Korean food as of late, and WOW. I feel like Korean food and other more "ethnic" styles of food are really getting popular in Grand Rapids, especially with the younger crowd. I recommend the Squid stirfry (The pork looks good too but I can't squid is a bit easier for me to eat). And the Spicy beef based soup on their Korean menu! It's about medium~ spice based on the Thai spicy scale, but perfect for me! I wish they had shabu shabu because that's one of my all time favorite dishes! :) Hot pot love. What else to recommend.... As for the rolls I've tried a great deal but I really do love the Kuni Roll (mostly raw fish) I'm not that big into the deep fried ones, but Kuni will be your new love! It has yellowtail, masago, smoked salmon green onion that will seriously delight your taste buds! Speaking of which, yellowtail roll is always a great staple too! :) And it is exceptional here. Service is still great here. I've noticed that some of the old servers are gone and new ones replaced but there are a few I still recognize! I don't think they know my name but whether I walk in on a date night or with a group of friends they seem to recognize me and make a little small talk :) That's definitely a good sign for me! To people who haven't been here before, usually it's a bit quiet but once the place fills up the restaurant gets pretty rowdy with people talking to each other/drinking and the sushi bar calling out orders that are ready! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

A very nice dinner. A good selection of both sushi, rolls, and cooked meals including combination plates. Sushi prices were reasonable. I ordered sashimi and shumai and both were nicely prepared. Service was great. On a Tuesday night the restaurant was very quiet with soft relaxed music - probably not a place where you'd want to carry on a loud conversation but perfect for quiet nights out..

Nice place for sushi. Stumbled across this place one night on the way home from work and I am glad I did. The product seems fresh and the rolls are done to order as you would expect. Depending on the chef the presentation can be hit or miss and the consistency of the food could use some work. I am a fan and would suggest anyone give this place a try.

Sushi Yuni is nestled in a strip mall on the outskirts of GR. It had one of the best ratings in the area for sushi so we gave it a shot. Decor felt a bit more like a Chinese Restaurant rather than a modern Japanese Cuisine place which the logo and menu implied. Our waitress was great! Super attentive and very friendly. Kept our glasses full. They were surprisingly not very busy at 6pm on a Saturday Night. The sushi selection on the menu seemed awesome. Lots of selection. The pieces seemed a bit small and lacked flavor. I enjoyed a couple of them, but the others were sub par. I would visit again and try some of the others that looked interesting on the menu.

Came here for dinner on a work trip. I'm from Los Angeles so my expectations for sushi were pretty high. I ordered a dragon roll and salmon sashimi. I enjoyed the salmon--very fresh and juicy, but it was a tiny portion (as compared to what I'm used to in LA). The dragon roll was small as well (for the price) considering it's a specialty roll and the rice was a bit hard. I was very disappointed because typically those two items would fill me up but here, they didn't. I'm giving it three stars because the food was just alright.

This sushi place is great for a business meeting or just taking out my 10 year old. The service is great & I love their creative menu. Outside of their great sushi, the soups, apps and house salad are Awesome. They also now serve alcohol, which you won't hear me complain.

Second time coming here with my boyfriend (who if you've read any of my other reviews know we eat sushi once a week for the past year)... LONG list of specialty rolls that are all pretty unique. The ONE strip mall sushi I'm NOT afraid to eat. The waiter was super sweet with recommending rolls for us. We we're really impressed that he wasn't trying to get us to eat the most expensive or generic rolls but gave us an honest reccomendation based on what else we've had. My boyfriend LOOOOOVES the Michigan roll, which I have to say, is pretty damn tasty but I love their Kamikaze! Crabmania or whatever it's called was GREAT!!!! The Crystal roll is the most unique roll we've had. I know there were other rolls we had, and the other time we went as well, but those were the ones that come to mind. You know when the sushi is fresh... and IT WAS! This is a five star place compared to other options in the are we checked out, but from someone who eats sushi often its a solid four. So forget the other places in the area, THIS is the place to go

Highly recommended their Chirachi, it has so many pieces of fresh sashimi. And I like their spicy seafood salad too. Good quality, nice seating and service.

Sushi kuni I'm from NYC, so I wasn't sure what to expect from a sushi restaurant in Grand Rapids. But I was in the mood for sushi so I took my chances. I'm not exaggerating when I say this: It was the best sushi I've ever had! Put it this way: it was so good, I went there again the next night! I ordered some special rolls. One had thin slices of Filet Mignon on top, which I've never seen before. It wasn't a "traditional" roll, but definitely a nice twist. I also had another special roll, which was full of flavor, called the BBQ roll. It had different fish inside, cooked eel on top, wrapped in foil, and served on fire. Crazy right?! It was delicious. Their other rolls were phenomenal. As with most good sushi restaurants, their prices are a little steep, but well worth the money. They say you get what you pay for, and this is no exception. Need I say more? No, so get over to sushi kuni for the best sushi ever!

Woe is me! I came from Chicago where there were fantastic sushi places fevery other block to a land of of few sushi options beyond the cooler case at Meijer's. This is a first world problem if I've ever seen one. I went during that week of freakish heat because I was NOT about to cook anything. Nice, cool sushi sounded perfect. We got the tuna flower appetizer, a house salad, friend got a seaweed salad, and a variety of rolls and were very pleased. The menu provided a good variety of options and not everything was slathered in mayo and drowned in tempura batter. The appetizer was awesome. Is there anything better than spicy tuna and avocado? Probably not. The only thing I would have wished for was for everything to be colder. However, it was the hottest week of my life. I'm pretty sure I was just unable to cool down to reasonable temperatures.

Went to Sushi Kuni and was absolutely in love with them! The sushi was amazing and so much better than most all other places in town! We sat at the sushi bar and ordered some rolls and a dish off their menu. The special of the night was called "Choi's roll" and they said that it will be on their menu from now on. You have to get it and it is so fun to watch him make it. The roll has filet mignon strips on top and he torches it to cook it in the flames. It is big and its delicious! We will definitely be back and I think we have found our place for sushi. We are looking to go with some friends and order a sushi boat. When that happens, I will be back to yelp about it! Check it out. Don't miss out. So Good!!!

My husband an I tried this place for the first time based on the reviews. I never write reviews. This is a first. It was reasonably priced. Sushi is never cheap. I've noticed some comments in comparison to California sushi. I'm a native California now living in Michigan the past 3 years and obviously California has more resources for better sushi, but if you can't go to the west coast I really believe this is a great second besides maybe Chicago. Being Asian and from SF area I need my Asian food fix and this surely did it. Friendly staff and family orientated restaurant. Very casual atmosphere. Yes the Sushi could have been whipped out faster, but you know what I rather it be done right and taste good and we weren't in a rush. Can't wait to go back and try the Korean food now.

Very bad experience. The service was unacceptable. The waitress chatted with the other guests (looks like they're familiar) just beside our table. We're deeply disturbed by their behavior when having our meal. And we're overcharged by $5 tips which we really don't willing to pay (that was close to 30% tip when adding that amount, which is fairly unreasonable). We're very disappointed about this dinning experience.

There's a reason this place is rated the best sushi restaurant in town. Everything about my experience here was top notch. It was wonderfully inviting with incredible presentation of food, kind and attentive service, and DELICIOUS sushi. (A little side: I was happy to see that they even have good photography of their food on the menu, which shows a professionalism that one doesn't always find in restaurants.)

Hands down, the best sushi place I've ever had the pleasure to visit. My husband and I happened to be in Grand Rapids for an afternoon and stopped here based on (surprise surprise) the Yelp reviews. Are we ever glad we did! The place is very unassuming from the outside, located in a strip mall off the main drag. It's actually a bit of a dive. The restaurant interior is pretty small and the decor is nothing special, but all of that fades away from notice as soon as your food arrives. We've had the miso soup (pretty standard but delicious) and the takoyaki for starters. Incredible takoyaki - perfectly cooked and absolutely melt-in-your-mouth - not what an octopus n00b like myself was necessarily expecting from this dish. Over the course of two visits, we tried several rolls - the ones that stick out from memory are the Derby Roll, Moonlight, Vegas, and Caterpillar. The first thing that hits you about the rolls here is the presentation. They are arranged absolutely beautifully, and certain ones even look like their namesake (for example the Dragon Roll). The rice is perfectly and deliciously cooked and the fish is possibly the freshest and highest quality I've had for a long time. Every flavour stands out so well and yet blends perfectly with everything else. The lobster tempura in the Derby Roll is absolutely divine. While the Caterpillar Roll is pretty standard across sushi restaurants, this one was so fresh that it stood far apart from the crowd. The real winner here, however, is the crab salad that tops a few of the items on the menu. The crab is shaved into these long, thin strips. I'm not sure how it's seasoned, but rest assured it was one of the best things I've tried in my history of eating. My husband and I ended up picking it off the top and saving it for last. We were happy to find out that you can actually order it as an appetizer as well - something to keep in mind for next time! The service is basic but prompt. There can be a bit of wait for the sushi during dinner time but the end result pushes the wait time completely out of your mind. One thing to keep in mind - it is a BYOB establishment so don't go expecting your usual selection of sake and Japanese beers! I would give 6 stars if I could - it's such a bummer I no longer live in the area, but I would make the trip to Grand Rapids just to eat here again.

Wonderful atmosphere (I loved the fact that they were playing good classical music - not pop or cheesy Christmas tunes, given that it was a few days to Xmas), truly friendly service, and very good food.

The sushi rice, the fresh fresh fish and their preperation is what makes this restaurant top notch. My favorites are the salmon roll, the spicy salmon roll, the spicy crunch roll, the Spartan roll, the Vegas roll, and their Philedelphia roll. If you want to try some unique fusion, try the Mount Fuji or the Crab Mania. So good. I've had sushi at all the Japanese restaurants in Grand Rapids. Had sushi in Chicago and Grand Haven. Sushi Kuni is the best. For reals.

There are not that many options in Crawfordsville for sushi, so I was excited to see a well reviewed sushi place close to where we were going to be staying. The sushi was so fresh, and oh so good. Ashley is right when she says "Sushi Kuni = love". I love this place and went back often while visiting Grand Rapids. The lunch specials offered lots of great food for a very reasonable cost.

I have traveled often to the Far East, Tokyo being a connection to most major cities in Thailand and Viet Nam...Sushi Kuni is by far the best in Grand Rapids. Not the least expensive, but the prices are in line with what is given. The owner is an adorable woman who seems to work every hour of the day. Soon to get their liquor license this is a MUST for any person who seeks real, tasty, impeccable sushi. It is quite simply the best in Grand Rapids. Don't forget the Korean Specialties as well. I don't give 5 stars easily...this may be a six.

Sushi here is the best in town well....that I know of so far :) I had korea seafood pancake which was okay. Not the best but not too chabby. Sushi was great. I still have to go back and check for other special rolls they have to offer. The one I ordered was similar to spider roll with shrimp tempura in the same roll.....loved it!

I have been eating sushi in California which is the best place I have had sushi just because everything is so fresh, But Sushi Kuni is definetly one of the best places I have been for sushi. I was fresh, delicious, and great portions. The only complaint I would have is that it does take them awhile to make the rolls, but when they taste good they can take all the time they want... It was a great atmosphere, super nice waitress, and best sushi I have had since Ive been home from Cali.

Maybe it's because most of the sushi I've had in the last year has been in Vancouver, but the reviews got me really excited, only to have a rather lacklustre experience. The restaurant smelled a little odd (as in not very clean) when I sat down. I ordered softshell crab tempura, which they did not use panko breading, but rather a very heavy batter which overpowered the taste of the crab and was too greasy. My salmon sashimi was ... warm ... and tasted a little old. The rainbow roll I had was alright, though not tightly rolled, so the insides (crab, avocado and cucumber) all fell out. The service was relatively prompt and polite, but nothing specifically stood out for me here. For regular fare quick sushi, this is okay, but I think I might want to try another place, or wait until I go back to the West Coast.

Pros: great quality; many options to choose from Cons: Too long of a wait! (Second visit was less long) Overall: I love clean, simple flavors and the GR Roll hits the spot! Excited to find a yummy sushi place in Grand Rapids!

WOW! we had a coupon and had never been there before, usually when we get sushi we go out to Mikado or Wild Chef and we are kind of picky, but we were blown away by Sushi Kuni. Great Rolls! Great Service! VERY Friendly! Great Tuna! Beautiful Food! I'm so glad we got a coupon and tried it! We will tell all of our sushi friends and absolutely will return soon! I can't wait!

My husband and I returned here a short while ago and tried a number of the specialty rolls and LOVED them all. The sushi was as good or better than I remembered from my previous visit. Sitting at the sushi bar is so interesting, we kept asking the waiter and sushi guys what rolls were going out because they all looked so good and we wanted to know what to try next time we stopped in. I think I'm addicted.

This place is quality. The only reason I didn't give them a 5 is because I chose rolls that didn't blow my mind. But what you are looking for in a quality sushi place, Sushi Kuni has.

This place is great, on a sushi bender yesterday we ventured to this place before a show in Grand Rapids. We rolled up (lol) and were skeptical of this place simply based off of the location and appearance from the outside. Once we were inside and seated our minds had changed. Great service and staff followed by very fresh and tasty sushi. Can't wait to go back!

MA great sushi restaurant! The fish is always fresh and flavorful. The chef has the art of presentation down and is very friendly. When the BBQ rolls are being prepared the smells make your mouth water. You can't beat the quality of the fish; the best in Grand Rapids. The menu is very extensive with lots of choices. The wait staff is very pleasant and helpful. We can't wait to come back again and again. March, 2014 I think the sushi has started to change in a different direction. I cannot say the fish is fresh and delicious anymore. I think the quality has changed. The sushi art is just a business. The pride of preparation is not there. Maybe I came on a off day, but I have had better else where.

Would definitely come back. We tried several rolls, but I'm coming back for one especially: KAMIKAZE! Great flavor and crunch. Both my daughter and I raved on it. Appreciated the picture-laden menu and helpful server, so if you're not used to sushi ordering it makes it easier.

Stopped here with a coworker after a long drive. Saw the good reviews and had to check it out. Some of the best, most fresh sushi I've ever had. The volcano roll is piled high and absolutely incredible. Definitely check it out if you're in the area

After only having gone to Mikado for my sushi fixes since I've moved to G-Rap, I was interested in trying other sushi places for comparison's sake. After trying out Sushi Kuni I was VERY happily surprised and don't plan on ever going anywhere else to satisfy my sushi cravings! :) I think their prices are competitive and I've felt that I get more for the price I pay, i.e. more/bigger rolls. Also, the atmosphere is much warmer and more comfortable. As with many sushi houses, the good value deals are always during lunch, which I would recommend! I've had a few different rolls the times I've gone there (California roll, spicy Cali roll, spicy tuna) and have loved every one. Warning though: the spicy tuna is very spicy!! The seaweed salad is also scrumptious, and my boyfriend liked both the chicken and beef teriyaki he's gotten when we've gone (since he's not into raw fish like me). All in all, a great find that I'd recommend!

Incredible sushi! The fish was fresh and the menu was creative. I don't remember the name of my dish but it had tuna and salmon and it was spicy and it was amazing. I also love the decor and the service. I will definitely be returning here often after my move to West MI.

Looking for a good sushi place so my husband and I tried this place for lunch and was pleasantly surprise considering we are in west Michigan. We ordered three rolls: red dragon, ninja and kamikaze. All were delicious but our favorite was the red dragon roll. Service was also great! We will definitely be back when we need a sushi fix

I am a Korean American and also lived in South Korea for 3 years. So as you can imagine, I am very picky about my Korean food. The Korean menu is relatively limited but neither the less, its the only place I go for my cravings in Grand Rapids area. I recommend their Bibimbop and mandu- gook ( soup) The 4 star rating is only reflective on their Korean menu. For their Japanese menu, I give it a 3 stars. My husband has had bad experience with poor quality fish/sashimi

Pretty good! Unfortunately vegetable rolls never seem to be as exciting as the specialty fish rolls, but the quality of the ingredients was great. The avocado was perfectly ripe (not always the case at other restaurants). My boyfriend tried the Alaska roll and some kind of shrimp tempura roll. He said both were good; although he said the cream cheese was a bit overwhelming on the Alaska roll, but that's probably a matter or preference. Admittedly, I do miss Shogun (formally in this location), but Sushi Kuni is a fairly nice replacement.

  • Lynn H.

Our server was great. She kept our tea cups full and was very friendly and helpful. The food we had was fine. It took a lot of work to find rolls on the menu that didn't have tempura (or crunch) in them. I really liked the Mt Fugi roll. The Ninja roll was ok. We had tempura softshell crab as an appetizer and the tempura was heavy. Not my favorite sushi - even for Grand Rapids.

Absolutely amazing! The best in quality as well as freshness as far as the sushi goes. Now I havn't gone just once or twice but seriously several times since mid April, I was at Shoguns last weekend, it was so crazy they ran out of rice! Well I came in just over a week later anticipating the opening of Sushi Kuni, open minded to a new restuarant. I live just blocks away and first and foremost I was thrilled to know that it was going to be a Sushi place and when they hung the sign up dating it just over a week away. I already had good spirits about the place. I can't really compare these two places or any other Sushi place for that matter. You go in, the place is cleaned up (you know your absolute fav, mom-pop style asian place is kinda dirty at best) this place is amazingly clean. They got rid of all that dusty dirty stuff hanging over you while u ate. The sushi bar isnt this dark obscure corner anymore, its right there for ya to look over all these mouth watering fishys~ bright as can be! The music, though some of it a lil to poppy for me, is upbeat fun, none of that dull depressing sounds of ocean waves crashing.. and you know that other stuff. The staff, though not Grandmas are young fun energetic people, they have a very attractive staff, the servers are young and all and all they seem on the ball, little snags here and there but, they are new, they are just getting situated. The Sushi staff and the kitchen staff are so fun and happy, always greeting us and calling out farewells. The little cook girl in her outfit looks absolutely adorable! The owner is as sweet as she can be. I was a little more accustomed to reserved asian places but really it is almost a completely different concept on the sushi dining and asian cuisine, it is so fun and enjoyable. did i mention BRING YOUR OWN DRINKS WINE BEER WOOOOO, I get so fat and happy filling up on food becuase I was able to save so much bringing my own drinks and still be able to really enjoy myself the way I would want to! You can't help but to leave a big tip to match your satisfaction! 29th and Breton is a bit out of the way but really in terms of quality, freshness, hospitality you would have to drive possibly out of state to match it. I'll say, just like one of the servers told me, you just have to try it yourself and see. No special ginger sauce but now that Ive experienced amazing sushi its like my eyes have been opened to a new level, I will call it Sushi Country! Oh but do try the Ginger dressing salad, not for the sushi, just the salad, it really is to die for. Stop by the party store right behind the car dealership across Breton Street and grab a bottle or two but on your way back out bring me a "Choi's Roll" yummm! Long story short, amazing food, service, atmosphere and the best drinks i can mix up at my table! I Love Sushi Kuni!!

Love their sushi, their special rolls are fantastic! The server was friendly, and the atmosphere was lovely. I did have a problem with the long wait when we were one of two tables, I'd hate to think of how long of a wait a Friday or Saturday dinner would be!

If you say this place is the best sushi restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I suggest you need to explore more sushi else where. If you're comparing this restaurant to any one of the sushi restaurants in Michigan or anywhere else, the sushi taste very typical here nothing special. Would I ever return? Nope!!
